Class 4 - The Christmas Day Truce
Class: Mr Carruthers - Derwentwater Year: 2018 - 2019
We've been studying the first world war, all week. It is one hundred years since it ended. One of the things we learned about was the Christmas Day Truce, in 1914.
The German and English soldiers called a truce for Christmas Day. They sang hymns together, exchanged gifts and then played games of football (England vs Germany, of course!). It is an amazing, unbelievable, but true, story.
We recreated the events in class. We researched some historic sources to find out the facts, then acted out the scenes and learned some of the possible language that would have been used, as they communicated with each other in German and English. We also created artistic drawings of the scenes on that amazing Christmas Day, in 1914.
