Challenging diversity and equality

Lesson: Understanding the World

Class: Mr Tyson - Ennerdale Year: 2020 - 2021

A couple of weeks ago, we (in class five) had a discussion about equality, diversity and stereotypes. We found two books in the school library which sparked our conversation. These books were called, 'The girls' book of crafts and activities' and 'The boys' book of things to make'. We looked through these books and there were things in both books which both genders said they would enjoy. We were shocked at the book titles and so we emailed the publishers to discuss our concerns. The publishers emailed us back to let us know that they agree with us and that the books are no longer being published. They thanked us for our email and the conversation we were having in school. They also asked us to select a couple of books from their website which they offered to send us for free. The books have now arrived and we continue to challenge stereotypes, equality and diversity. Thank you to DK publishers for kindly responding to our email and sending us the books.
