Our Curriculum Approach

At St James Junior School, our vision for French is to inspire a love of languages and foster an understanding of different cultures. Through the study of French, we aim to broaden pupils' horizons, encouraging them to appreciate diversity and develop communication skills that will benefit them in a global community.

We follow the CUSP scheme for French, which provides a well-structured and engaging curriculum. Lessons focus on developing pupils' confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing in French. Vocabulary and grammar are taught systematically, enabling pupils to build their language skills step by step and apply them in meaningful contexts.

Our Intent and Aims

Our aim is for all pupils to develop a strong foundation in French, equipping them with the skills to communicate effectively and fostering an enthusiasm for language learning. Lessons are interactive and immersive, using songs, stories and practical activities to make learning enjoyable and memorable.

Assessment in French

Assessment is integrated into each lesson through activities that allow pupils to demonstrate their understanding and progress. Regular reviews ensure that key vocabulary and concepts are reinforced, while end-of-unit tasks provide opportunities for pupils to apply their learning.

Enrichment opportunities

We enrich our French curriculum with cultural experiences that bring the language to life. Pupils explore French traditions, festivals, and everyday life, helping them develop a deeper connection to the language. Where possible, we incorporate workshops or themed events to enhance their understanding and enjoyment.

By combining a clear curriculum structure with engaging activities and cultural exploration, we aim to instill a lifelong love of language learning in our pupils. At St James Junior School, we are dedicated to creating confident, curious, and culturally aware learners through the study of French.
