What are soils made of?

Lesson: Science

Class: Mrs Pickering - Bassenthwaite Year: 2020 - 2021

This week in science we found out about different soils. We looked at examples of clay soil, sandy soil, chalky soil and peat soil. We found out that decomposers (worms, fungi, and bacteria) eat dead plant and animal matter, taking in nutrients from it.
Then we enjoyed a soil hunt around the playground recording information about the different soils. We also found a worm on the grass which is an example of a decomposer. We looked at the information we had found and chose two soils to compare using a Venn diagram.
Finally we went into the hall and used the magnifying glasses to explore different rocks and fossils which some children had brought into school to show the class.
