Music 2024 - 2025
Mr Beattie
Welcome to the Music page.
At St James’ our vision for music is to enable all children to learn to sing and play an instrument and create music together. It is our aim that they have opportunities to develop their own interest in music.
In music, we use a diverse range of authentic composers, songwriters and performers as a basis for our music lessons. Children increase their cultural capital by learning about different pieces of music, their composers and the contexts in which they were composed.
All children receive a weekly 1-hour session in music. They also receive a weekly 25- minute singing practice during Collective Worship with daily singing of hymns as part of our collective worship structure. In addition, a skilled team of peripatetic specialist music teachers are provided to supplement the curriculum so that children are given the opportunity to learn guitar, keyboard or percussion. Twice annual performances are provided so that parents can attend and listen to the progress made.
For percussion tuition we provide an after-school club. Drums and other percussion instruments are provided for this. Parents are offered the opportunity to attend a live performance of the drumming band as a traditional opening to our annual Easter Fayre, so that children can showcase their music and the wider community can enjoy the carnival atmosphere.
We take great pride in our Christmas and summer productions which give our children the opportunity to work together to be part of two whole-school dramatic performances which involve music, dance, singing and acting. In addition, we offer wider singing opportunities in our community through links with local choirs and when performing Christmas carols for various audiences across our town.
